This page contains background information on the main characters from Buffy and Angel prior to Buffy season 1. It is meant as an introduction for new viewers.
Buffy Anne Summers - Buffy comes from a troubled upbringing. She learns that she has been chosen as the Vampire Slayer leading to conflicts with a group of vampires that leads to her being expelled from school. At about that same time, her parents get a divorce and she and her mother move to Sunnydale to start over again.
Willow Rosenberg - Willow is one of the most intelligent students at Sunnydale High. She's a childhood friend of Xander's and has a long history of a mutual dislike for Cordelia.
Xander Harris - Xander is a childhood friend of Willow's but has no idea that she has a crush on him. He and his pal Jesse have received years of abuse and rejection from Cordelia.
Rupert Giles - Giles has spent the past years in training to be a Watcher and was assigned to Sunnydale to train Buffy. In his youth Giles experimented with the black arts and received the nickname "Ripper".
Cordelia Chase - Cordelia is a spoiled and stuck-up member of the Sunnydale elite. Her family is very rich and Cordy looks down on the "loser" students like Xander and Willow.
Angel - Angel was a reckless youth from Ireland named Liam who was sired by the vampire Darla and became Angelus. As Angelus he wreaked havoc throughout Europe for over a hundred years. He tortured an innocent young clairvoyant girl and turned her into the insane vampire Drusilla. He especially loved torturing pure and virtuous victims. In the late 19th century he chose the wrong victim and was cursed by a gypsy tribe who restored his soul. Tormented by the memories of the horrible acts he committed, Angel spent the next several decades in self-destructive grief.
Joyce Summers - Just having rebounded from a failed marriage, Joyce has to relocate with her seemingly troubled daughter to a new town and new job.
Spike - Also known as William the Bloody or William the Bloody Awful Poet. As a human Spike was an extremely awkward, insecure and none-too-talented poet. After having been rejected by the woman he was infatuated with William was sired by the vampire Drusilla. As the vampire Spike he became a savage and violent killer without the finesse of Angelus or Darla. Spike preferred bloodbaths and killing vampire slayers. Spike, in fact, killed teo slayers, one during the Chinese Boxer Rebellion at the turn of the 20th century and the other in New York in the 1970s.
Drusilla - A precognitive but insane vampire that was driven mad by her ability to see the future and by having her family tortured and killed by Angelus. Joining with Angelus and Darla, she eventually sired the brutal vampire Spike.
The Master - A centuries old vampire who sired the vampire Darla when North America was first being colonized. He has given up the trappings of humanity and face has become bat-like in appearance. In the 1930s, while attempting to open the Hellmouth, he caused an earthquake that collapsed half the town and he became stuck within a prison of energy underground.
Darla - A former prostitute from American colonial time who was sired by the Master. She later sired Angelus and they rampaged through Europe. They were later joined by Spike and Drusilla and chased by the vengeful soldier Holtz. Eventually after Angel was cursed with a soul she became disgusted with him and cast him aside.
Oz - One of the cool kids on campus, Oz is a member of a local rock band.
Jenny Calendar - The high school computer science teacher with an interest in the occult. After having come close to dying in a brush with a demonic force, Jenny pulled away from helping the others. Giles was finally able to convince her to come back and help stop the Master from becoming free.
Anya - Once, long ago, Anya was spurned by the man that she loved and she became the vengeance demon Anyanka. As a vengeance demon she granted whatever wish for revenge a woman could think up.
Dawn Summers - Buffy has always had a younger sister... sort of
