The Blues Connections Of The Animals
The Animals were a great blues-based rock group from the sixties. They are best-known for their powerful interpretation of the classic "House of the Rising Sun", a song they picked up from bluesman Josh White. The group's lead singer, Eric Burdon, was a dedicated collector of blues records. The band was lucky enough to have the opportunity to back up bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson (aka Rice Miller) early in their career. Of all the great R&B bands from the British Invasion (The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Yardbirds, etc.), the Animals were the most committed to the blues. Despite having tons of success with hits like "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", and "It's My Life", they changed record labels and replaced their manager because they felt that they were pushing the band away from the blues and pushed in a direction that was too commercial.
