Bioluminescent Springtails light up Christchurch, New Zealand

Acknowledgements and Credits

Specimens of Collembola described and photographed herein were collected and provided by Graham East of Christchurch, New Zealand who also kindly shared his knowledge and understanding of his "glow buddies." This page could not have been created without his help, cooperation and a great deal of time and effort spent doing experiments and testing theories. For his patience and commitment to the GEO Project I am eternally grateful. Thanks a bunch, GE!

A number of experts in the study of Collembola have reviewed the GEO site and offerred help in siting errors and answering quetions with respect to Collembola. In time such much appreciated review should contribute to the GEO site as all involved are endeavoring to better understand exactly what is a GEO and how these little creatures may enlighten the world.

Special thanks to Dr. Wanda M. Weiner of Laboratory of Invertebrates, Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Dr. Weiner contributed her expertise and time so generously to identify specimens enabling the determination that bioluminescence was due to Anurida granaria (Nicolet, H., 1847).

I would like to thank Dr. D. A. Crossley, Jr., Department of Ecology, The University of Georgia, Athens, GA and Dr. Ernest C. Bernard, The University of Tennessee, Entomology and Plant Pathology, Knoxville, TN. Both provided live specimens of Sinella curviseta which have been used in learning how to rear and handle Collembola in general.

Checklist of the Collembola produced by Frans Janssens was a most informative resource as were the comments, suggestions and opinions offered by this expert.

The Postal Microscopical Society recognized Project GEO as The Springtail of the Month site.. Thanks for the link!

Many others deserve a warm hug and a big thank you, but for one reason or another prefer to remain anonymous. I sense some very deserving souls are worried about their professional reputations being tarnished by association with Project GEO which is a labor of love and creative expression as much as it is a quest for knowledge and discover about these wonderful creatures which glow, Anurida granaria.

I would hope all who have shared by offering their expertise would welcome being associated with this endeavor as we wish only to move forward in the honest and open search for truth in learning about the natural world around us. The unknown is far greater than the known and Anurida granaria has much more to tell us about its life and the role it plays in the cryptosphere. I would hope others take a keen and open interest in this study which can be fascinating for young and old alike, for the experts as well as the ameatures.

Therefore I invite everyone who wishes to make a contribution of their knowledge or expertise, to please do so openly and honestly. However, if you are among the many others who have shared your expertise, special knowledge, insight and help, and wish to go unmentioned by name, please know that your encouragement and support it is much appreciated. Thank you all!
