"We must follow our 'airy voices,' follow them through every discouragement and doubt and disbelief till they lead us to our City of Fulfillment, wherever it may be."
--Chapter 19, Emily Climbs

As L. M. Montgomery is a master of description and has a genius for making her characters alive and real, there are many memorable lines in her books. Below are a few of our very favorite!

"A living present is so nice," she told Ellen," because it keeps on getting nicer all the time." -- Emily Starr, Chapter 1

"Oh," cried Emily, dancing down the garrett stairs, "I feel as if I was made of star-dust." -- Chapter 9

"A human being should not kneel to any one but God," said Cousin Jimmy unexpectedly, still staring at the ceiling. -- Chapter 16

"Goodbye, and may you always see a happy face in your looking-glass!" -- Father Cassidy, Chapter 18

"Caroline, don't ask me to tell you anymore family horrors before my niece, you scandalous old woman. At your age! I'm surprised at you!" -- Aunt Nancy Priest, Chapter 25

"But you are a fairy yourself--or you wouldn't be able to find fairyland. You can't buy a ticket there, you know. Either the fairies themselves give you your passport at your christening--or they don't. That is all there is to it." -- Dean Priest, Chapter 27

"For heaven's sake, girl, don't write what you can't understand yourself." -- Mr. Carpenter, chapter 31

"The fat, black 'Jimmy-book' seemed to her like a personal friend and a safe confidant for certain matters which burned for expression and yet were too combustible to be trusted to the ears of any living being." --Chapter 1

"The discovery of beautiful and interesting words always gives me joy. When I find a new, charming word I exult as a jewel-skeer and am unhappy until I've set it in a sentence." --Chapter 11

"It's hard for a big house to have any personality," said Emily thoughtfully. "But little houses almost always have. That house is full of it. There isn't a line or a corner that isn't eloquent, and those casement windows are lovable--especially that little one high up under the eaves over the front door. It's absolutely smiling at me. Look at it glowing like a jewel in the sunshine out of the dark shingle setting. The little house is greeting us. You dear friendly thing, I love you--I understand you. As Old Kelly would say, 'may niver a tear be shed under your roof.' The people who are going to live in your must be nice people or they would never have thought of you. If I lived in you, beloved, I'd always stand at the western window at evening to wave to some one coming home. That is just exactly what that window was built for--a frame for love and welcome." --Chapter 13

"Spring again! Young poplars with golden, ethereal leaves. Leagues of rippling gulf beyond the silver-and-lilac sand-dunes." --Chapter 2

"Well, thank heaven no two days are ever exactly alike!" --Chapter 19

"[Emily] was standing where Tomorrow Road opened out on the Blair Water valley. Behind her she heard Teddy's eager footsteps coming to her. Before her on the dark hill, against the sunset, was the little beloved grey house that was to be disappointed no longer." --Chapter 27
