Was there really
a Rasputin and did he cause the downfall of the Romanovs?
Yes, there was a Rasputin and he did indirectly lead the Romanov to failure. As a result of Alexis’s hemophilia, his mother's anguish over the disease led her to faith-healers, and eventually, the monk Rasputin. Grigory Rasputin, the 'devil monk', is the most mysterious figure in
the Romanov tragedy. Born a poor Siberian peasant, Rasputin became Alexandra's
closest advisor due to his ability to alleviate her son's sufferings. However,
Rasputin influenced the Tsar's political decisions, and his meddling crippled
the Imperial government. The damage Rasputin inflicted helped topple the
Romanov dynasty two months later.
