Pentecostals

There are several divisions within the Pentecostal world. The largest doctrinal division is between Trinitarians and Apostolics. The latter believe that Jesus is the only true God.

The other division is between groups with Baptist or Methodist theology. Wesleyan groups tend to be more conservative in dress and amusements. They believe that a person must become born again and be sanctified before being baptized in the Holy Ghost. Sanctification, whether gradual or sudden, is an intensification of holiness in a person's life. Groups that have a Baptist background do not believe in sanctification as a separate step.

The largest pentecostal group is the African American and Trinitarian Church of God in Christ but there are more African American apostolic denominations than trinitarian.

Trinitarian

Foursquare Gospel

The International Church of the Foursquare Gospel was founded by the ever entertaining Aimee Semple MacPherson. Doctrine is nearly identical to the Assemblies of God and in fact, share a common history. Founders of both groups were involved in the Azsusa Street revival in the early 1900s.

Calvary Church Chino Hills has a program called Real Radio. This is part of a denomination called Calvary Chapel. They are very controversial in that they apparently hire people with checkered pasts. For newspaper articles on them, check out Rick Ross.

Apostolic

There are three denominations on shortwave that use the name Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith. They are all historically related, African-American churches. They are each very conservative.

The Whole Truth Gospel Program is hosted by Shelton Rapha. Their website is The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith.

Irwin Baxter, Jr. is a minister in the United Pentecostal Church. He often gives talks around the Midwest. I met him when he spoke in SE Michigan a few years ago (2005?).

Free People's Mission is hosted by Ewald Frank. He is a follower of the late William Branham, who was famous on the sawdust trail many decades ago. Branham was not Trinitarian, something that alienated him from many pentecostals.

Other Pentecostals

There is always a debate about whether or not a Jew can believe that Jesus is their Lord and Savior. I leave that for others to argue about. I classify them separately so people can find information easier.

Tony Alamo is a Jewish convert to Christianity. He and his late wife were famous in the late 60s for busing Hollywood hippies to their remote church and trying to convert them. When she died, her followers believed she would be resurrected. Obviously it didn't happen. The group is mostly communal and still occasionally receives bad press. They are Pentecostal. Alamo is a Messianic Jew.
