April Photos!

Nicole and Christopher (4/01/01)04/04/2001, Wednesday - Someone In The Attic?
(age: 7 years, 1 month, 17 days)
Nicole woke up the other night to a sound and came to mommy to ask what it was. She thought it sounded like daddy was walking around in the attic. I had been doing some work up there last weekend. When Tina checked it out, it ended up being her mouse making noises on her wheel. The mouse is often times quite active at night.

In soccer Nicole has been playing goalie and doing a pretty good job. I think she likes it too. It's more nerve wracking for me, though since all eyes are on Nicole as the ball approaches her goal.

Last Sunday we took the training wheels off Nicole's bike. She did great! It was later in the day and she did get a little frustrated, but she's on the move and is better than I thought at putting her foot down when she can't keep upright.

Nicole is still enjoying her pet mouse. Christopher has found a way to combine playing with Nicole's mouse and playing with Legos. Over the weekend, they put the mouse on top of a box he couldn't jump off of. They then built a staircase out of Legos and placed mouse food on the stairs to encourage him to climb. That kept them all entertained for a long time.

04/30/2001, Monday - Grades, School, Spanish, Bikes
(age: 7 years, 2 month, 13 days)
Nicole got her third quarter report card last week. All A's and E's (for excellent). As you can imagine, we are very proud parents. Last Thursday her talented and gifted class, along with all the talented classes in the city, held a "Product Fair" where they displayed all the posters and other products they created for their research projects. They also displayed many other works that they did in the class. There are pictures from there to see in my April photo album.

Nicole's school is looking into offering an English/Spanish language emersion class in each of several grades. At first it was a shock and somewhat upsetting, but the more we've looked into it the more it looks like it could be a good program. Also, it would give Nicole some more challenge in school that we think she may enjoy. The class would teach the curriculum in English one day and alternate to Spanish the next. Lessons would not be repeated, they would just use different languages to present the material. The goal is to have 60% of the class be Spanish speakers and 40% be English speakers. The school is still assessing interest. We'll see how it goes.

I don't remember if I've written this before, but Nicole is now riding a two-wheeler. She's doing a great job. The only issue is that her bike doesn't have a kick stand so it's propped up funny in the garage. She's outgrowing it anyway, so we'll have to spring for a new one soon. Christopher has a bigger bike now and loves to ride it fast.

This weekend was beautiful. Highs in the low 80's and sunny. Nicole had her last soccer game on Saturday and we went to a pool party at the coach's house after the game. Most of the girls swam, but Nicole thought the water was too cold. Christopher enjoyed splashing around in the water, though.

I'll add these to a new May journal when I get a chance:
05/07/2001, Monday - School Work, Fractions
(age: 7 years, 2 month, 20 days)
Nicole has been doing extremely well in school. She's been learning some fractions in school, so I thought I'd quiz her while waiting for some software to install at home. The software had a progress bar that showed percent complete. When it got to 50% I asked Nicole how much that was in fractions, considering we were counting to 100. She said 1/2. I thought that was pretty good, so I decided to ask her at 75% what fraction that would be. I didn't expect her to know, but she answered 3/4. I was quite surprised. She's very bright. She also brought home a 26 lesson cummulative math test on which she got 100%. I'm sure you can't tell that I'm proud.
