Hydroponics
Hydroponics - the science of growing plants without soil. Hydroponics alleviates some of the problems of nature, while giving the farmer precise control of the plants With this method, plants root in a sterile, soil-free growing medium and are watered daily with a nutrient solution that's ideal for quick growth. Since roots don't have to stretch out to search for food, less space is required than for conventional gardening. And, if you automate your system, hydroponic gardening is care-free as well as compact. Hydroponic farming is done in a greenhouse. Sterilized pea gravel or coarse sand is a cheap, low-tech growth medium for a large-scale hydroponics operation, but most growers now use a wool-like mat, available from hydroponics suppliers. While virtually anything can be grown in a home hydroponics system, certain crops (such as bean sprouts, some herbs, or leaf lettuce) are especially well suited to being grown in a commercial hydroponic operation. Quality of the crop and yield per square foot exceed that of other methods to the extent that it makes good economic sense to do some things the hydroponic way. If a small homemade unit fits into your homestead plan better than a large greenhouse-based system, read this excerpt from a Better Homes and Gardens article, entitled, A Big-Producing Mini Farm.
