....Missed opportunity....

I have heaps of funny stories to tell you about my meetings with George and Andrew. Well I think they're funny.

Back in 1987 (I think, I cant really remember) I read in an English newspaper that GM was going on holidays and from prior knowledge GM usually comes to Australia in Jan/Feb, so I rang my friend in Wagga (which is a town approx 5 hour drive from Sydney) and insisted that she came to Sydney because I had a gut feeling that George would be holidaying. I know it sounds stupid but it is true.

Anyway I caught a train to her mums and waited for her to arrive. She finally arrived about 1am and we drove into town and parked out the front of the hotel he usually stayed in. Anyway, we were talking, smoking and listening to some Wham! music, when we heard a car pull up and someone yelling "We're home", anyway, I looked out the window and guess who it was....yes it was him!! I nearly shit my pants, I didnt know what to do. Me and my friend jumped out of the car and were staring at him.

Anyway he was blind drunk, his mate was weeing in the garden, a female was with them, and she was checking us right out. Anyway, we took some photos of George being piggy backed by his mate but we were too scared to approach him, so we just sat out the front and watched him parade for about 40 mins. HEAVEN. He was a real ham, and he knew we were watching. He was teasing us by coming forward to the door. I'm sure if we were OLDER (I was 17) we would have approached him and looking back I think if we did we could have probably had a good time because there was not another fan in sight and also the fact that he was drunk. Oh I wish I could go back in time!

....Fiona falls for George....

Another time when George was visiting Australia, he was with Andy and Donya (his then girlfriend). I can't remember exactly what year but I know it was around New Years Day. Again me and my friend Linda hung around the Sebel Town House (hotel where all the stars stay) as we'd heard on the grapevine that George was holidaying again. Anyway we rocked up and hung around the hotel for about 2 days. The first night we saw George and he was getting into a taxi with a friend (male) and of course we followed him. He went to one of the most swanky restaurants in Sydney. So we waited and waited and waited. Finally after a few hours I said to my friend Linda, " hey I'll just go up again and check out what he's doing. We were actually hanging around hoping that he would go to a local disco and that way we could bump into him. Remember I was only 17. I'm just thinking now why didnt we just go in the restaurant and have a meal...anyway as I was going up to see what was going on, with my pen and album handy, George and his mate walked out and I just froze, I quickly turned around to run and tell my friend to start her car, but I had dropped my pen, slipped on it, and fell flat on my butt!! George and his mate just stared and I was so embarrassed, I just run off. He must have thought what an idiot. Needless to say we followed his car but lost track of him.

....George's hotel....

The next day heaps of fans found out, thanks to the newspapers, that George and Andy were in town and of course there was heaps of fans. Me and Linda were not impressed, of course, we wanted them to ourselves. Anyway we met up with this other fan, who was actually not really a fan of George but Spandau Ballet, and he told us he knew what room George was in. We didnt believe him but he said he would prove it. So we all snuck down to the laundy room of the hotel and went up the laundry elevator, we didnt want any of the other fans seeing us go in the front door, finally we got to his floor, and the guy told us this is his room. Well, we did'nt know what to do, but we could hear George playing Elton John. Then, this jerk knocked on his door, me and Linda froze and thought what are we going to say, so we started to walk off because if he did answer we didnt want him to know that it was us. Then George yelled out, "yes", Craig said, "George", he said, "Who is it?". Craig said, "Craig", George said, "What do you want?", Craig said, "an autograph", George said, "Im having a bath". Well we just cringed, and we really told this guy where to get off. Who was he anyway, he was not a real fan!!

Later that afternoon around dinner time, knowing his room number, my friend Linda decided she would go up and have a look around. When she got to George's floor he was coming out of his room, Linda pretended she was staying on the same floor, then she turned around and walked back to the lift, George was standing there with her. They both got in the lift and Linda was standing directly behind him, she checked him right out, he was wearing his Yog ring, and wore jeans and a green shirt, he looked really hot. Linda then come bolting out and told me George was coming out, so we grabbed out pens etc and when he came out all the fans just milled around him. We didnt get near him, we couldnt see the use so we preferred just to watch. He was not impressed and I dont blame him, the guy was holidaying and he had idiots like us hanging around watching every move.

....Fiona finally meets THE MAN!!!....

Back in 1987 I did finally get to meet George after all my missed chances. It was one afternoon after work when me and a work mate (I had to drag her along with me) went to George's hotel. We got out of the car and headed for the hotel when luckily George and a mate were walking down the street. So now was my chance. I was sooo nervous. I pushed my work mate to go up to him because I didnt know what to say. Anyway I just stood there staring, my friend was talking to him and I just couldnt believe I was actually standing there next to him. How lucky was I. He signed some albums for me and my friend took a photo of us together. My friend wanted a photo so I took the camera and backed out onto the street to get a good shot, anyway a car nearly hit me, I was not thinking straight, how could I when the man of my dreams was standing in front of me. George could see I was nervous and told me to calm down and that it was alright. How embarrassing - at least my dreams had come true that day. Now that Im 10 years older I hope I get another chance and not make such a fool of myself. Maybe I might be privileged enough to get a back stage pass when he tours here.....yeh and pigs might fly....
