PROON: Can you feel the Resonance? SACRAMENTO – Proon jumps into the the fray of the Sacramento rock scene with a five-song demo EP entitled, “Foreword.” Proon’s musical inspirations stretch from essentially one end of the rock spectrum to the other. The band’s varied musical influences combine to make a solid rock sound which can be compared to Creed or Soundgarden. Foreword” provides just a sampling of the band’s offerings, from the heavy, dark-toned “Monster” to the tragic ballad “Don’t Smile.” Filling in the musical palette are the enigmatic tune “The Secret” the punkish, wall-shaking “Resonance” and the almost tongue-in-cheek, “Alright With Me.” The CD is available at some Sacramento music stores. Proon came together in late 1997 when guitarist Scott Vaughn and drummer Victor Balta set out to find a bassist and a singer/lyricist and stumbled upon Curtiss Pflager and Ken Cuozzo to fit those roles. Combining such diverse influences as Merle Haggard and Radiohead, there was near-instant chemistry as the band had laid a solid foundation for its first-ever song, “The Secret,” by the end of its first practice. Since then, Proon has put together more than a dozen original songs, with Cuozzo’s lyrics as a solid backbone. Cuozzo, 23, spent time in Bay Area bands such as 3rd Rail and Wood before moving to Sacramento and joining Proon. He is pursuing a master’s degree in Neurobiology at Sacramento State, having already received a bachelor’s in Biology and Psychology from St. Mary’s College. Pflager, 23, spent time in the punk band Shawn before finding Proon. He is also a student at Sacramento State and is working on a bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics. Vaughn and Balta finished high school together in Vacaville before moving to Sacramento and eventually starting Proon. Vaughn, 22, is a bank teller in Sacramento and is still working toward a business degree from Sac State. Balta, 21, is a sports copy editor at a newspaper in Vacaville and is working on a bachelor’s degree in Journalism at Sac State. Proon is setting out to bring music lovers in and out of Sacramento a fresh sound with thought-provoking lyrics and a positive attitude with an edge.
