For Smith, the body has served as the means of exploring and attempting to comprehend the place of the human being in the world. She is joined in this deeply humanistic pursuit by two of her peers, the artists Ann Hamilton and Robert Grober. Hamilton believes that we can best understand life experience through our bodies, specifically our senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch, and contends that the body is as valuable a source of knowledge as the mind.
