6/20/05 - Some Punks Are Fucking Stupid
Jesus Christ. I am so tired of the shitty attitude of most punks. I've said it before and I'll say it again -- I'm not punk, and I never claimed to be. I used to think that term had some meaning, but now I see it's merely a rallying cry, an anodyne label for callow cowards who think they have the entire universe pegged. Give me a break. I don't give a damn about mohawks, or being 'hardcore', or any of that shit. I just make music. And I don't want to have to put up with every fuckhead who thinks he has enough motor coordination and enough of a grasp of the English language to tell me that I'm not a punk. I'm not a punk, okay? And I couldn't be happier. I don't have to assosiate myself with the dreck of the subculture, a bunch of fucking losers who troll the Internet, spewing their half-witted, half-baked, half-grammatical, totally-moronic reasons why they're the punkest motherfucker who ever walked and I'm a total poseur. I admit it! I pretend to skate, and I've never heard the fucking Ramones, and blah blah blah blah. Fuck off.
So I'm still gonna listen to indie music. I have a real problem with why this or that is popular and most popular music in general. But I'm not so close-minded that I refuse to listen to something just because it's popular. Hell, I love R.E.M. I love 'punk' (whatever that means) music, and I love the nebulous association punk has with free thinking and progressive ideas. But I fucking hate some of the people. Why are so many asswipes attracted to such wonderful music? Fuck off and die, hardcore shitheads. Someday, you might learn to deal with the fact that most other people don't think just like you or buy the same goddamn records at the hole-in-the-wall record store you frequent. Eat shite.

News - 6/3/04
Hey, my (Dave's) new band Bastard Saints has a show at 8:00 in Missoula at Area 5. The Stillborn, Expendables, and Joey Butta and the Fuctones are also playing. We're going first, so show up on time!
News - 3/3/04
In case you can't tell NWI is dead. That does not mean that we aren't still trying to make money -- in a couple of months, you can expect a career retrospective, tenatively titled "The Very Best of NWI." It will have tracks from our year and a half of life, with mostly new stuff -- new recordings of most of our originals, the self-titled EP, and a couple of acoustic demos. NWI -- always trying to make a buck.
Random Updates:
We won the Hamilton Battle of the bands. Yet we lost the Missoula one. That's us: never in the middle.
We had a bunch of shows at Westview during poetry slams.
Our last show was at Higgins Hall in October. I was sick. We played a cover of "21st Century Digital Boy" by Bad Religion without having ever rehearsed it and kicked its ass. That makes up for the totally shitty Screeching Weasel cover of "Dummy Up" we did in June.
Shawn had a weird disease where one of his eyes swelled to the size of a basketball, then exploded. That's right: 30-Second Shawn is now 1-Eye Shawn! Avast!
In other news, I'm still playing with a band. We were gonna call ourselves Bastard Saints, but that name's taken. We might still go with it. Anyway, the band features Charlie of the FMZ and me each on guitar and vocals, Bob of the FMZ on bass, and a new drummer, Kevin, who's a rockin' skinsman. Maybe someday we'll have a website (and a name), but for now we're writing and learning new songs. If you are dying to know more (and I know you're not), check out the current haunt for this nascent band, the FMZ Message Board.
So, thanks to everyone who came to shows and moshed, even when we sucked, and still came to shows when we started to suck less. It was a fun run, we made some awesome music, I had a blast playing with the band, and hopefully we had some impact on the Bitterroot's desolate scene. Good night, God Bless, and Eat Your Vegetables!
News - 5/26/03
We have a show on Saturday at the Hamilton Fairgrounds! Check out the Show Page for details.
The show went well. We have a decent video; I'm curious about the sound quality for the other bands we recorded. A special shout-out to the genius who wrote the Anarchy Symbol on the door. The next day all the people in Hamilton saw your brilliant act of vandalism and switched over to a leaderless, classless society! Inspire revolution everywhere by drawing an "A" in a circle!

We have a show on Saturday at the River Street Dance Theater!
Horseshoes will be returning to the valley! So will UDA! C'mon
down! We still have a couple of our Free EPs left. We'll give
copies to the people who can best show how much they like us.
Taking off clothing counts. ;-) We'll also be debuting the Shawn-penned
"Idiot Fries," a ska song. Oh my! I plan to record
our set as well, so be sure to scream sultry things into the
mics! Check the Shows Page for all the
grimy details!
There are a lot of Bitterroot releases coming out soon. Dave's
first solo record is due any day now, it is cleverly titled Misanthropomorphic.
Of course, you've already got your copy of NWI's free self-titled
EP, right? The Suckers, a new pop-punk (I.e. three-chord, not
Blink-41) are almost finished with their self-titled debut, and
NWI is starting to record its first full-length record. Look
for them all on Interpunk over the summer! All will be recorded
at Why?-Fi Studio. As a matter of fact, check out the new Releases Page to see cover art and track
lists. Bitchin'!
There's a new essay on the Stuff
Page: Dave's Ten Punk Tips.
Read up for how to be a real punk rockers! There are also
new photos from our last practice and the Teaser EP photo shoot,
taken by Vince "Cretin" West. See them on the Photos
Page, of course.
I'm so pissed at the University right now. Ideally, I'd be
able to sign up for classes before anyone else. At least I have
a room -- but it's in Jesse. Yechhhy. I'll have to ask John where
he's assigned. I'm almost moved out of my own room; there's only
a few boxes of stuff left. Shawn and I are (probably) going to
the Higgins show on Thursday.

Shawn tells me we have a show confirmed for Saturday, the third
of May. It's a Battle of the Bands. There's no chance in hell
we'll win, but at least it;'s a show. Or is that negative? I'll
be a cock rock asshole, okay. WERE [notice strategic lack of
apostrophe) GONNA ROCK THEYRE SOCKS OFF IT'S NWI ALL THE WAY.
Anyway, it's at the U.C., somewhere. I wish he would give me
more information. Some other bands are gonna play, too. Hopefully
we should have some free crap too. Depends on if we finish vocal
for our CD on Friday.
Oh -- and a new song. "Hate Bomb." Fast and vicious.

I'm so fucking pissed off at George W. B*sh right now. Grrrr.....
Man, I wish I had the power the piss all over the fifty-plus
year history of the U.N. You go, George, fulfill the goals of
conservatives as voiced by George Will, that a return to life
as it was in 1900 is a "serviceable
summation of the conservative's goal..."

In honor of St. Patrick's Day , the coolest country on the planet,
and my mastery of Cascading Style Sheets, the site will be presented
in "St. Patty Vision" for an indeterminate amount of
time.
We didn't play the show, but I managed to fill in with a half-hour
acoustic set. The crowd didn't flee in terror covering their
ears with their hands, so my voice must be better than I thought.
I might even do that again sometime.
Right now, we are putting the finishing touches on our first
almost full-length release, tenatively titled "Meet the
Nerds" at Why-Fi Studio. It will feature ten songs: Vinny
is a Cretin, It'll Be Okay, Everything is Fine, Officer, Shut
Up, Mary Jane Parker, Shake Me, Sophomoron, Grow Up, and Kill
all the White Man. Depending on many things, we might be able
to get some new tunes recorded over our respective spring breaks.
I'm not quite sure how things will go as far as price (I'm
thinking $2). We'll probably send it in to Interpunk and so forth.
We will hopefully learn some new tunes and get to record them
over my spring break period. Choice cuts include re-writes of
"Reconsider Life" and "Am I Immature" (from
my Killing
the Hare days), A spiffy snotty new tune called "Hate
Bomb", "American Gothic" (we know it, we just
gotta record it), and "The Meaning of Life." Stay tuned!

OMG NWI has a show! LOL! Sorry for the haxor speak. Stay tuned
to the message board for the latest developments, but apparently
it will be Friday, March 7th at the Union Hall in Missoula. Also
playing will be our good buddies the Flying
Men of Zimbabwe, The
Reptile Dysfunction, and a band from Wyoming called Shiddy
which I really know nothing about and thus cannot comment upon.
Rock on.
News - 2/25/03
After listening to much R.E.M./Bob Dylan, I have decided to start
writing songs in an acoustic/experimental vein. Think less-electronic
Radiohead meets the Ramones' "Needles and Pins." This
will include adding another guitarist to our lineup to play the
acoustic guitar and possibly a keyboard player. Chance's services
will no longer be needed; he will be replaced by a drum machine.
If you would like to join the new Nerds With Instruments,
send e-mail here.
Just kidding.
GeoCities has angered me by uploading the wrong file, but
I will not speak openly against them for fear of oppression.
Needless to say, the problem has been rectified.
News - 2/3/03
The message board is fixed. Word.
News - 1/16/03 Yes, we actually have a show tomorrow, at the Hamilton
airport. Check out the message board for the latest-breaking
news. I also added a 'Get Involved Links' section to our Stuff page, so you can do more about
being a punk than whine about the government.
1/11/03 We finally have a photo of Choach, to prove that no, we
do not have an imaginary drummer, and a couple other ones that
Shawn snapped while we laid some tracks down. Speaking of which,
click here to download our latest recording of "Mary
Jane Parker," the sweetest love song ever written to
a creation of Stan Lee.
12/24/02 Happy Festivus. We are currently (as in, right now) recording
a full-length free demo for shows and such at Why-Fi Studio (which
is my garage). So far, we've only done one song, but it's mixed
and everything. That song is, of course, "Vinny is a Cretin".
it. The sound quality is much better than that of the shed demo
we did last month -- you can actually hear the kick drum, for
starters.
Killing the Hare starts recording today, and FMZ on Thursday.
I'm a busy beaver.
12/4/02 Shawn suggested I update this site, but there's really
nothing to update. I won't change the poll until there are 20
responses, and I've been too sick to write a new essay. I have
some new pictures, but they're far away in Corvallis. Finals
week is week after next, then I'm outta here (Missoula) for five
weeks.
It looks like the show on the 13th is not going to happen.
This makes me sad. Shawn will see about it, but don't get your
hopes up (all none of you).
Oh, and everything was cleared up.
And, in case you wanted to know, I had a very, very, very
happy birthday. They had carrot cake in the UM Food Zoo on Wednesday.
