The Throne Room

roomwire03_small.jpg (23720 bytes) There are 1700 geometric objects in this room. Ok, ok, some of them are instances and copies, but still the room is filled up pretty well. I tried to make it beliveable, even if I really didn't do any medieval architectural research...
At the beginning, the animation was supposed to end right after the knight was inside the castle. The idea of extending the thing and model the throne room came at a later stage and got me into one of the most complex models of the animation.

Modeling architectural thing is not as hard as modeling characters, but it's time consuming if you want to take care of all the empty spaces and light it properly. Textures/materials should be made to look similar, meaning that they should have the same level of details, scale and a color/contrast that match.

Lighting was a key factor. The torches have 2 lights each with different shadow casting settings and both animated to simulate the flickering and the movement of the fire. There are 27 lights casting shadows and I have to admit, rendering each frame required a pretty powerful machine. roomwire04_small.jpg (17617 bytes)
The sun light from outside moves slowly and has an animated volumetric fog. A depth fog was also added to give the room a sense of hugeness.
roomwire05_small.jpg (19065 bytes) Some of the knight "accessories", such as shields, swords and halberds, were used as ornaments. Door, throne and stools were pretty detailed models even if they appear for just a bunch of seconds. It took time but I don't think it was wasted.
A note about the paintings on the walls. You can see only three of them, from a distance and sometime hidden by the fog. They have three old drawings of mine, pencil drawings, colorized very quickly. They are not really medieval paintings, but hey, they are ok for the purpose. One of them is in the author page.
