The Castle

castlewire02_small.jpg (17588 bytes) Once I was done with the knight, I started modeling the castle entrance. The main reason was to test the "environment" and see if I could match the realistic look of the main character.
Because of the close-ups I was planning of the gate, I wanted an extremely beliveable stone columns and arches. Bump maps, materials, textures helps only when you are far away with the camera. When you are so close and you need a rough surface, the only way is to have a rough geometry.

So, the stones have a huge number of faces. Crazy, but I never regretted it because the images looked exaclty how I wanted them. The chain is another big mesh for the same reason.

The chain appears twice, outside and inside, where a mechanism slowly rotate and move the bridge down.

I'm not sure if such a mechanism was really used at that time, but it was looking cool enough for the purpose. :-))

The bridge is much simpler, but I tried to achieve some realism bending  and moving each single piece of wood in it. I stopped only when it looked "aged" enough.

Even if not a geometric model, the fog is part of this model and is important as much as the rest. It took quite a while to get the right volumetric light settings, projection maps, and the steam rising from the water around the castle.

The settings experimented on this scene, where then used everywhere in the outside shots of the animation.
