Ecological Gardening - Your Path to a Healthy Garden

Marjorie Harris, 1996 (revised edition), Random House of Canada,
ISBN 0-679-30789-3

This is a terrific little book loaded with organic gardening tips. It is easy to read, and easy to understand. It covers such things as: compost; knowing and improving your soil; identifying insects, and understanding the roles they play in the garden; companion planting; water conservation and xeriscaping (low water gardening); and how to find and use environmentally friendly products. Lawns are covered, too.

The section on bugs contains some very good information about the good done by some bugs traditionally considered "bad", and what the presence of various insects can tell you about the health of your garden. There is a lot of very clear discussion on the use of various products in the garden, and clear explanations of not just what is damaging to use, but why. In fact, her clear and detailed explanations of the "why" of things is one of the greatest features of this book. It is especially good for anyone struggling to go organic, and getting lost in the world of so-called "green" products, and claims of "safety".

Another thing I liked about the book is the fact that it is written by a Canadian writer, and therefore the products mentioned are available in Canada. I have other books on organic gardening which were published in the U.S., and I am continually frustrated when I go to the store and find that the various products listed are either not available here, or are sold under a different name. I enjoy Marjorie Harris' writing. She is a well known Canadian gardening writer, and author of several other books.
