Things You Should Know

Baptism
1) The AME Church gives all adults a choice of baptism by springling, pouring, or immersion. However, the normal baptism procedure is that of springling.

2) At St James AME baptism occurs quarterly at a special Sunday Baptismal Service. New members will be notified via mail regarding baptism. Parents of infants and children should call the church when children are ready for baptism.

Weddings
1) At least one session of premarital counseling is required. It is not our usual policy to perform "on the spur of the moment" wedding ceremonies. However, consideration will be given to emergencies or extenuating circumstances. A non-refundable deposit of $100.00 is required to hold any wedding date.

2) Ministerial compensation, along with other gifts or donations of courtesy and appreciation, will be decided upon in consultation with the couple.

Funerals
1) Notify the church office immediately when death occurs in the family.

2) Please DO NOT plan a funeral without first consulting the church. The schedule of your Pastor and church should be considered as well as the schedule of the funeral director.

3) As a member of St. James AME, you may expect your Pastor and church to render whatever services we possibly can to assist the family in their hour of sorrow.

Illness
1) Immediately call the Pastor, Minister of Pastoral Visitation, your Class Leader, or the church office with the following information: nature and seriousness of the illness, location of the patient (whether at home or in the hospital), and if the name should be put on the sick list.

2) If he has been notified, your Pastor will make every effort to visit you in your home or in the hospital. If you desire, the Pastor and/or a member of the Pulpit Staff will commune you at the proper time of the month.

3) Please notify the church upon release from the hospital.

4) REMEMBER, your Pastor cannot visit you or pray for you if he does not know that you are ill. Therefore, it is your responsibility to notify him. If he cannot be reached, contact the church. Do not depend upon your neighbors or friends to make your contacts for you.

Emergencies
1) Your Pastor is on 24-hour emergency call. Therefore, if any kind of emergency should arise (illness, death, etc.) feel free to call upon him at any time of the day or night. Church (973) 622-1344, Parsonage (973) 325-8267.

Office Hours
1) The regular office hours are from 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday. The office is closed 12pm Wednesday for Noonday Service.

2) On his days off or when he is not in the office, the Pastor call the office for messages. If he is not available when you call the office, leave your name, the number at which you can be reached, and the nature of your call (emergency, church business, personal, etc.) The Pasor will return your call as soon as possible.

3) The Pastor has a demanding schedule, however, he is never too busy for his members. Therefore, members should always feel free to contact the Pastor about their personal concerns.

Further Helpfull Information
1) There are certain times that the Pastor prefers not to be disturbed unless the person has an emergency or a dire personal concern.

On Sundays, the Pastor does not transact any church business whatsoever until after the 10:45am worship service and then business matters ought to be kept to a minimum. Since business is being transacted six days of the week, Sunday, as much as possible, ought to be devoted to worship and praise of Almighty God.

2) The Pastor usually does not accept Saturday evening engagements since that time is spent resting and in preparation for Sunday.
