The engineers have replaced plans to dredge a "work channel", 100 feet wide and 7 feet deep where the lagoon isn't deep enough to accommodate the barges. They plan on only operating barges at high tide and only loading them half way . The water is less than seven feet deep for all of the 2.1 miles across the lagoon, except for the Intercoastal Waterway. (Areas consistantly deeper than 6’ are shown white as seen near Jensen Beach Bridge at right.) A channel across the lagoon (less 500 ft. for the intercoastal waterway) would involve over 23 acres of dredging. Builder estimates of seagrass loss have grown from 1.1 acre at the initial charrette, to 2.4 acres at the August 20th meeting. These estimates do not include the acres of seagrass taken by propwash. Further loss of seagrass from silt in the water and loss of light has not been accounted for. This is not a realistic plan.
