Alignment AA was chosen by the Expressway Authority
The Jensen Beach Bridge is 3.8 miles away
Note West Virginia Avenue on left, highlighted in red above "Port St. Lucie". The new bridge in Port St. Lucie is to cross the St. Lucie River.
Plans call for the "Taking" of a right of way from the St. Lucie River Aquatic Preserve and the adjacent DEP buffer area (shown in pink to the left of Walton Road).
Not shown in this map's detail are Evans Creek and Hog Pen Slough between the St. Lucie River and US1 and the North Coral Reef Waterway which runs NW along residential area.
These waterways are marked as manatee protection areas and provide safe refuge away from the navigable channel in the St. Lucie River (speed limit 25 MPH.)
The West Virginia Bridge would cross these to link to Walton Road which would then cross the Indian River Lagoon to Hutchinson Island. (see other side)
Manatee habitat in two aquatic preserves would be damaged by these projects.
