Some brief tips and hints.
1. Large seed.
Soak first. Chip the seed coat. Rub the seed with sandpaper. Sow one at a time onto the compost, cover with top dressing. Sow seed with tweezers individually round the circumference of the pot.
2. Get a named label into the pot as soon as possible.
3. Try to keep the centre of the compost clear to allow air into the centre. This may help reduce damping off.
4. Flat seed should be sown vertically with the 'mark' down.
5. If you can see the bottom of the seed sow with this down.
6. If rare seed doesn't germinate stir up the top layers, top dress and give it one more year.
7. Sow fine seed onto the top dressing and soak the pot until water is almost on the surface.
8. Remove from deep soak and the seed will be drawn down into the top dressing.
9. Keep liverwort and mosses away with very dilute potassium permanganate (just pink), or a sprinkling of coal dust.
10. Write any code number on the base of the label as well as the top. It will not fade and if it gets broken the code is still in the pot.
