At this stage of the year I sow seed from the seed exchanges and watch the pots daily to provide a bit of protection should they germinate. Let me know if you have a seed want and perhaps we can swap fresh seed later in the year - if I manage to get some of the seed.
I collect seed from the plants in my garden throughout the year and in October I send this cleaned seed to the Alpine Garden Society and to the Cyclamen Society. The swapping of seed like this has a great value as it continually allows plants to find a climate where they can thrive. It allows fresh seed material into our gardens and collections and allows us to spot something different or new. A large seed exchange, though infinitely more valuable for its range, can mean that the seed has lost some of its viability. Most use cold storage of the seed. If alpine seed arrives and you are not able to plant it, pop it in the ice box or the deep freeze.
