History
Hieney, Bud, Blue & Red Dog, Ali, Porch Dog, Domino, Fido, Pepe & Jr, Bozo & Shadow, Wilbur Van Gogh, Issabella, Popcorn, Taz, Dusty, Sterling & Silver, The Gabors, Coyote, Shawnee, Casper, Chickabee, Tux & Purt, Viva, Mr. Bojangles, Mortisha & Floppy, Spectre, Ghost
Hieney: Cockapoo, passed away at 15 years of age(born 01/17/85), ("stray-dog of dogs"-showed up one day in heat-put adds out & no one claimed her. She is not a people person. Nor an animal person. She's simply "Hieney", let's just say a postal worker during PMS would describe her personality. She was 1 of 2 full time indoor dogs.)
Bud: Registered name-Fugitive Jet's Leo, 21 years old (born 01/01/85). Use to be an exercise horse for Quarter horse race horses, but now my regular trail riding horse.
Blue & brother, Red Dog: (See Current Update) Beagle mix (strays-They were 2 of the original 6 strays that showed up here @ the Ranch. They both passed away at 13 years old (born 04/01/88), I think we have the "original" RED DOG.) In the picture, Red is on the far left & Blue on the right.
Ali: Registered name-Miss Reality. Sorrel Quarter Horse.
Use to "run the track". She would now be 26 years old (born 01/01/80) & "retired". She had "COPD" (a progress lung condition), so we kept her "up" during the summer months with a fan on her at all times.
Porch Dog: Australian Sheep Dog-? mix, passed away at 14 years of age(born 01/01/89). (Stray-one of the funniest animals we've ever brought in. He's got the shortest legs of any one creature with a normal head & body size. He can head & heel a horse quicker than any other, catch the tip of the hair of the tail (no pain involved here) & will literally swing thru the air not letting go till he's ready.)
Domino: Dalmatian passed away at 13 years of age(born 07/04/90). (The only dog that was actually purchased.) Very hyper, but loving. She has come up with some cancerous skin tumors, but hopefully the vet "got it all" and she'll have some more years here with us.
Fido: Shorthaired tabby cat, died at 9 years old (born 09/21/92). ("stray-cat of cats"-his mother abandoned him & his siblings the day of their birth. Fido is the only one that made it. His surrogate mother was a dog-Hieney hence the name "Fido". This may also explain why he is not a people person either. My "old" vet calls him the "Cat from Hell".) He doesn't have "good kidneys" & we have to give him 200cc's (sub-Q)of Ringers Lactate 2 times each week. (See Update: May, 2001)
Pepe & sister, Jr: "Mix of mixes", 12 years old (born 01/01/94) .(Strays-they actually showed up about 1/2 mile up the road, but finally made it to our place. Jr. is afraid of people & loves to chase my truck as I head to town. I've clocked her at 28 mph. Pepe-weighing in at only 35lbs. is afraid of nothing.) (See Current Update)
Bozo & Shadow: Shorthaired Calico & Shorthaired Black Cat, 10 years old (born 04/14/96), & 12 (born 06/01/94), years old-respectively. (Strays-they live on the back porch with 2 bunny rabbits). Bozo showed up in our barn when she was about 10 wks old & spends most of her life "hiding". She had a "wolf worm" coming out from under her skin, the vet took it out & had no complications. Shadow acts as her surrogate mother & is very loving.
Wilbur Van Gogh: Wild Boar (Feral Pig), 11 years old (born 03/02/96). (Stray-found rooting through the pasture-thought he was a Pot Bellied Pig (WRONG)-the neighbor's Pit Bull & Doberman took off one of his ears: hence "Van Gogh". Showed up weighing about 40lbs, now he's about 350lbs.)
Issabella (AKA Izzy): Leghorn, passed away at 8 years of age (born 01/01/96). (Stray-you should have seen me trying to catch her). She & 3 others showed up out back in the pasture. Unfortunately the dogs got one, but I "caught" the other 3.
Popcorn: Welsh Pony, he's 21 years old (born 01/01/85) & spunky as can be. He's "foundered" many times, so we keep him up during the spring (the "active growing season" for plants-esp clover).
Taz: Golden Retriever-Chow mix, 10 years old (born 09/10/96). (Stray-worst looking critter we ever brought in, but now one of the prettiest.) He first showed up at our neighbors house with a sibling. The other pooch got run over & somehow Taz showed up at our place. She was sooooo mean, I had to wear thick gloves when I picked her up. She's now sweet to me, but strangers, beware!!
Dusty: Lab-Chow mix, 10 years old (born 01/01/96)-stray: she is afraid of Jr., strangers, she's the quietest critter around here & sweetest dog we have-except maybe for Coyote.
Sterling & Silver: Cockatiels, 8 years old (born 05/15/98) & passed away at 7 years of age (born 01/17/99)-respectively. (The latter being described by the "bird vet" as "developmentally challenged". Sterling well he just usually attacks me as I enter the room.) (See Update: May, 2001)
The Gabors: (Zsa Zsa, Eva): Silky/Coachen Mix Hens (Magda-the 3rd sister) Leghorn/Coachen Mix Hens, passed away at 5 years of age(born 11/16/98). Zsa Zsa had a neurological problem, & died winter 2000. Grace diligently "hand feeds" her sister, Eva, a supplement every nite & she also gets to live indoors. (See Update: May, 2001, See Update: August, 2001 & See Current Update)
Coyote: Chow mix, 8 years old (born 05/26/98). My Mom & I found her on the outskirts of town. She was only a few weeks old & covered with fleas & mange. She was one of the ugliest puppies I had ever seen, but the sweetest one we've ever had.
Shawnee: Bay Quarter Horse, 15 years old(born 01/01/91). He use to race & actually ran 6th in the "Firecracker Futurity".
Casper: Coachen/Leghorn Mix Hen, 7 years old (born 01/01/99). Our vet tech called us & said that another one of their clients was going out on a walk & found a "stray" chicken. She wanted to know if we wanted it. Apparently the chicken had fallen off the truck on it's way to-well you know, Pilgrim's Pride or one of those places. All of her wounds have healed, she's made friends w/ the other chickens & laying big beautiful eggs.
Chickabee: Terrier stray, 9 years old (born 04/12/97). We found her (4-12-99) lying in the road, apparently hit by a car. Took her to the vet & after some medical attention she's at the Ranch & has made a full recovery. Have not found the owner, so here she is... She's pretty much a "psycho" dog!
Tux & Purt: Lab/Chow mix, they just turned 7 years old Oct of 2006 (born 10/03/99). Friends of ours (Donna & Ritchie) have a male Black Lab that visited a female Chow down the road from their home. Long story short, Donna & Ritchie took 2, the owner kept one (& threatened to take the rest to the "pound"), yep we took the other two. They are both wonderful dogs with great personalities. Since, we let Tux out "loose" on the 12 acres, we had him neutered (don't need him getting other strays pregnant).
Viva: Pit Bull mix, 8 years old (born 05/26/98). We saw her for a couple of weeks by the side of the road scavenging around. We'd stop & put out some Puppy Chow for her. One day she came up to us & let us pet her. She was covered with mange & very thin. After a little time, 3 "dips" & lots of Puppy Chow she is now doing well, but during her recovery she went "into heat". "Valentino"-an "unclaimed" stray (he could climb any fence & would "run" the neihborhood) cleared a 5 1/2 foot fence to get to her, we had Viva "spayed" immediately & she is now doing well. Valentino soon disappeared.
Mr. Bojangles: Shepherd/Chow mix, 7 years old (born 06/01/99). This fella showed fall 1999. He (along with Valentino & 2 others-see Mortisha & Floppy below) would show up every nite around 8 & raid our feed bins. I checked with neighbors & no one claimed them. We added a new dog pen (250'x50') & put him in it with Purt.
Mortisha & Floppy: Black Chow & one pup, 9 years old (born 07/20/97) & 6 years old (born 01/01/00)-respectively. The Mom showed up with Valentino & "Bo", but we soon noticed that she was pregnant & the 2 guys would come up here without her. Soon we found that she had her pups beneath an abandoned house up the road. Three had died (hit by cars) & 1 still stayed by her side. Every morning we would go down & leave some Puppy Chow for them. It took month's before they would let us touch them. The "mama" finally warmed up to us & we have brought her & the pup to the ranch. (See Updates: May, 2000 & July, 2000)
Spectre: He passed away at 2 years of age. We received this little guy when my sister said it "attacked" her. We pointed out that maybe if she had it neutered, that he may not be so aggressive. Anyway, we took him in to have him "fixed" & he showed up positive for Feline Leukemia. We have started him on Interferon & so far he is symptom free. He's very vocal & loves to be "loved" on. (See Update: August, 2000)
Ghost: "blue heeler", 6 years old (born 01/01/00). We were in the barn checking on Popcorn, who was in early stages of colic, when all of a sudden the other horses came running out of the barn. Long story short..... A young pup showed up (that apparently "spooked" the horses) "like out of nowhere" (thus the name "Ghost") & after we corralled him up we noticed that his jaw was "broken". Took him to the vet the next day & found out that someone actually shot this poor little guy in the jaw-shattering the bone. So...after surgery (he had 4 posts extending from the bone to the outside of his skin-connected to one long support post) & a lengthly recovery & he is now doing well. He's a "blue heeler" (a cattle dog). (See Update: August, 2000 & Update: December 2000)
