Introduction
I am preparing a new version of my 1992 book The Bounty Tahitian Genealogies of the Pitcairn Island Descendants on Norfolk Island. Readers are invited to contribute their family details to the genealogies, if they are descended from any of the Bounty Mutineers who landed on Pitcairn Island in 1789, no matter how distant. A number of changes will appear in the proposed publication: one will be descent lines, from mother to daughter from the original Tahitian women who came to Pitcairn Island. The following are sample aspects covering details in preparation of the new publication, for example, the 'controversy' of whether John Adams was surnamed Adams or Smith:
John 'Jack' Adams
4/5 November 1766, St John's, Hackney, Middlesex. Son of John Adams and Dinah.........He had a brother Jonathon (who wrote John letters) and sisters Rachel and Dinah Jemima. It is possible that he married before joining the Bounty, to Hannah and had a daughter Sarah. (Scott:1989). Adams died March 5, 1829 on Pitcairn Island.
Adams was clearly his real surname, not his alias, Alexander Smith, because:
(A) He didn't need an alias on Pitcairn, so why should his children adopt a false surname.
(B) His brother Jonathon Adams recognised John Adams for who he was, and wrote letters to him.
(C) His three daughters were named after family members: Dinah after his mother and sister, Rachel was named after his sister and Hannah after his English wife who very likely died before he joined the Bounty.
(D) His grandson was named after his brother Jonathon.
Married or 'liaised with':
1. Opuole (Obuarei, Balhadi...). Bounty wife. Died childless in 1793 on Pitcairn.
2. Wahineatua. 'Prudence'. Widow of John Mills and mother of John Mills and Elizabeth Mills. Later bore Adams three daughters, Dinah, Rachel and Hannah.. Apparently she and Adams broke up. Died April 29, 1831 when at Tahiti.
3. Teio. 'Mary', 'Sore Mummy'. Married in 1803 and officially in 1825. Died 14 April 1829, Pitcairn. Teio was the mother of Sarah 'Sully' before reaching Pitcairn. The Pitcairn Register gives Mc Coy as the father but there are some doubts. Adams English daughter was called Sarah, she seems to have died before Adams joined the Bounty because Adam's brother Jonathon would have mentioned something about Sarah if she had lived. Teio bore Adams' only son George.
