"I never grew up as a Carolina fan," Haywood said, his confession frank and without apparent shame. "I basically rooted against Carolina. But when it came time for me to be recruited, I looked at the best place for me. And this was it. "I never was the kind of person who went along with the crowd, so when everybody else was rooting for Duke or Carolina or the Bulls, I didn't go with that," he said. 'I liked Georgia Tech and Kansas. "When I talked about basketball, I liked Kansas and Jacque Vaughn, Scot Pollard, Steve Woodberry, Rex Walters, Adonis Jordan. I used to watch Carolina play all the time because it was a learning experience, but I never watched them to root for them."

  "I was not aware of that," Guthridge said, pretending to be taken aback. "I'll have to punish him with extra laps in practice. I'm glad he saw the light and came to Carolina."
