GU19 Win State Title.
AMHERST, MASSACHUSETTS - The United U19 girl's team overpowered rival United
Club of the Berkshires (U.C.B) 5-1 to capture the girls' under-19 state
soccer title at the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions at the University
of Massachusetts in Amherst.
"I am so proud of the girls," said Head Coach, Matt Cotter. "They played
like champions today. They deserve it."
Casey Grange and Ashley Steenbruggen netted two goals apiece in the
championship game, while Sarah Russell added one. Amy
Johnson dished out three assists. Tri-captain Cristina DeSimone garnered Most Valuable Player honors.
"They all stepped up their games," continued Coach Cotter. "You can talk and
talk and talk about what needs to be done, but it's action that matters.
They brought it today." They sure did!!!
United advanced to the state final by beating Weymouth (3-1) in the state
semi-final game. The girls finished 2-1-0 in group play and secured the
number two seed entering the tournament's final day. They beat Plymouth
(8-0) and Danvers (1-0). The single loss came to U.C.B (3-1) on Saturday,
as UCB needed the win to advance while United had already clinched a berth
in the semi-finals.
"We are the champions! We have gone where no United team has gone before!"
Declared tri-captain Shannon Skoglund.
United (11-2-1) was playing in the state finals for the second time in three
years and third time in the last five years.
