 THE 1998 NRL GRAND FINAL
|
In 1998, the Broncos won the NRL Grand Final against a gallant Canterbury Bulldogs team. The following photos were taken by the SBBS on GF day and help to show some of the excitement and jubilation experienced by the Broncos' supporters who were lucky enough to be there in person on the day.
OUTSIDE THE SFS
Although Broncos' fans were considerably outnumbered by Bulldogs' fans on GF day (the game being played in Sydney and all), the Broncos' fans showed their support in style:
Broncos fans mingle outside the ground.
The 'Bronco-Mobile' arrives outside the SFS (to the dismay of security guards and Bulldogs supporters).
Emma and Kandis model the new style of RL supporters headgear....
INSIDE THE SFS
In it's first year, the NRL decided to carry on the great pre-game entertainment traditions of the ARL.... Jimmy Barnes, Julie Anthony and balloons:
The Grand Final 'spectacular' as viewed from the balcony to the right of the scoreboard....
Those balloons....
A full house at the SFS.
THE FINAL SCORE
The game starts, the game finishes and the Broncos win (does anything else matter?).
Look at the scoreboard!
THE LAP OF HONOUR
The Broncos' fans get to see the trophy and the players up close during the lap of honour:
Darren Smith wears his Broncos' colours for the last time....
Phil Lee thanks the fans (and wonders where his blue Ansett Australia hat went to?....)
The Broncos are surrounded by the media as they do their lap of honour.
A pocket of Broncos' fans watch the trophy being presented to the winning side.
Tony Carrol and Shayne Webcke thank the fans for their support.
SYDNEY AIRPORT
Not quite satisfied with just having watched the Broncos win the 1998 NRL premiership, the SBBS load up the 'Bronco-Mobile' and head over to the airport to see the boys (and the trophy) onto the flight back to Brisbane. After Gordon Tallis and a couple of other Broncos have grabbed a hamburger from the airport McDonalds, the Broncos' players are escorted into Ansett's Golden Wing Lounge to wait for their flight to begin boarding (away from the growing crowd of Broncos' supporters at the departure gate).
Eventually, the boarding of the Broncos' flight is announced and the trophy (and the Broncos) emerge from the Golden Wing lounge:
Alfie and Emma reminisce about the game (Emma where did you get that blue Ansett Australia hat from?)
Kandis and Emma pose with Tony Caroll.
Kandis and Emma with Darren Smith.
When the NRL premiers trophy finally emerges from the Golden Wing Lounge, it is ripped out of the hands of the players and support staff. Who would do such a thing? Emma, Kandis, Peta and Lynn (Brisbane) can't miss this opportunity.
Michael Devere is accosted at the airport by (left to right) Snappa, Peta, Mark (front), Kandis and Emma.
The Brisbane-based supporters pose with the trophy.
STAR CITY CASINO
After scaring the airport staff and playing "orange" soccer down the hallways (just think, it is possible to sneak into the Golden Wing Lounge and steal fruit....), what's left of the Broncos' fans decide to head over to Star City for something to eat. Being sunburnt, drunk, wearing our Broncos jerseys, face paint and 'tatoos', we were worried that we may not be allowed in.... Star City must have very low dress standards, maybe they were just feeling sorry for us, or maybe they are just desperate for money...
The whole of the SBBS would like to take this opportunity to apologise to the people who were sitting at the next table. We honestly thought that you had left for the night and weren't coming back. How were we to know that you would come back looking for your bag of party poppers? They were very good ones by the way (they were very lound and had lots of streamers that were very difficult to hide when you came around again...) I hope the waitress didn't get fired when you accused her of stealing the party poppers.....
THANKS!
A big thanks to all of the Broncos fans who turned up to the GF. I'm pretty sure everyone would have had a great time all around.
I would also like to thank the Sydney-Based Broncos Supporters who have been with us all year. It's not that easy being a Broncos' fan in Sydney..... Friends, family, workmates and strangers call us crazy and cross to the other side of the street when they see us, but we still support the Broncos!
Finally, thanks to the Broncos for giving us such great moments in 1998. Here's to the same success in '99!!
