AMA ® with the collaboration of Ayub Medical College, Abbottabad
and Pakistan Thalassaemia Welfare Society® (PATHWEL) celebrated the
“International Thalassaemia Day” on 8th May 1997 at the Seminar Hall of
AMC. Papers regarding Thalassaemia were presented by various eminent doctors.
The function was well attended by the staff & students of AMC along
with doctors from all over Hazara. AMA also invited about 25 Thalassaemic
patients along with their parents. All the children were given beautiful
gifts. AMA gave the registered blood donors certificates of appreciation.
The other main event at this occasion was the “Poster Competition” organized
by AMA. The topic of this competition was “Voluntary Blood Donation for
Thalassaemic Patients”. The first three winners were given cash prizes
of Rs.1000/- Rs.500/- and Rs.300/- respectively.

The AMA Car Rally 1997 was organized on 13 July 1997 at the occasion
of “Abbottonians Reunion 1997”. Over 18 Cars including Land cruisers participated
in this Rally. AMA managed to raise funds for its various projects through
this rally. This was AMAs’ Second Car Rally. A “Night Cricket Tournament”
was also arranged by AMA. It was sponsored by the CGB Karachi. Over 10
matches were played under floodlight till 3.00 am.

AMA was formally registered under the “Trust Act” of Pakistan on
5th August 1997. Previously, it was working under the AOBA, which is registered,
with the Social & Welfare Department.

The meeting of the members of Board of Directors was held on 6th
August 1997 at the residence of the Chairman AMA. Important issues of the
Association were discussed. The Board also approved minutes of the last
meeting.

The Chief Minister NWFP inaugurated the “AMA Centre for Blood Diseases
of Children” at 12-D Awan Plaza, Abbottabad on 23rd October 1997. It’s
a modern well-equipped Blood Centre with the facilities of Blood Transfusion
& Blood Donation, along with the Laboratory facilities. The Chief Minister
highly appreciated the work of AMA & announced a donation of Rs.200000.

A Medical Camp was organized at the Army Burn Hall Junior School
and a Blood Camp was also held at the College Section. Over 430 students
of the first three classes were examined by a team of specialist doctors
assisted by male and female medical students all of whom are the member
of AMA. All the students were given “AMA HEALTH CARD” on which growth chart,
height, weight, eye sight, General Physical Examination, Oro-dental hygiene
were recorded. Children with medical problems were identified and were
referred to various specialist doctors for further management.
A blood Camp was also organized and blood was collected from the
students who had written permission from their parents. Facilities of free
Blood Grouping and Hemoglobin estimation was also provided to the students.

AMA was one of the organizers of the “Fuel Efficiency Car Rally”
from Islamabad to Bhurban. A team of AMA also participated in this Rally.

During the year 1997-98, a lot of new patients with Thalassaemia
were registered with AMA, taking their number to over 70. During this year,
AMA arranged over 231 blood donations for the poor patients in general
and for the Thalassaemic in particular. At the AMA Blood Centre, following
facilities were provided from September ‘97 to 31st December ‘97]
