PRINCELY COUNTY OF TIROL

The County of Tirol was founded ca 1140. It was united to the Habsburg possessions in 1363 and was made a Princely County in 1493. In 1849 Tirol became a Kronland of the Austrian Monarchy, enjoying a certain degree of selfgovernment after 1860/1861. __________________________________________________________________________________

AUSTRIAN LAND TIROL

In 1918 Habsburg rule came to an end and Tyrol became a Land of the new Austrian Republic. (2) (2) In 1919, following the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye the southern part of the Land was ceded to Italy. (see here) __________________________________________________________________________________

GERMAN REICHSGAU TIROL-VORARLBERG

After the annexation of Austria to Germany, Tirol continued to exist as a Land until 1939 when it was reorganized firstly as the Gau Tirol-Vorarlberg of the Ostmark and later, in 1940, as a Reichsgau, directly subordinated to the German government. (3) (3) The new Gau only comprized central and western Tirol the eastern part of the Land being annexed to Kärnten. It included also the former land Vorarlberg. __________________________________________________________________________________
