In 976 Karantanien and some other south-eastern territories of the Kingdom
of Germany, which till then had been dependent of Bavaria, were organized
into a separate Duchy of Kärnten, which, in 1335, became part of the Habsburg
possessions.
In 1849 Kärnten, which since 1804 had been governed as part of the Kingdom
of Illyria (1), was made a separate Kronland of the Austrian Monarchy,
enjoying a certain degree of selfgovernment after 1860/1861.
(1) The Kingdom of Illyria was one of the Habsburg possessions
which existed from 1816 to 1849, when it was broken up.

AUSTRIAN LAND KÄRNTEN
In 1918 Habsburg rule came to an end and Kärnten became a Land of the new
Austrian Republic. (2)
(2) In this period much of the Carinthian territory - including
the capital Klagenfurt - was occupied by Yugoslav troops.
Following the peace Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye of 1919
some minor parts of the land were immediately ceded to Yugoslavia.
Other parts - including Klagenfurt - remained partly occupied
by Yugoslav forces until 1920, when, as result of a plebicite
they were returned to Kärnten.
