KÄRNTEN / CARINTHIA

DUCHY OF KÄRNTEN

In 976 Karantanien and some other south-eastern territories of the Kingdom of Germany, which till then had been dependent of Bavaria, were organized into a separate Duchy of Kärnten, which, in 1335, became part of the Habsburg possessions. In 1849 Kärnten, which since 1804 had been governed as part of the Kingdom of Illyria (1), was made a separate Kronland of the Austrian Monarchy, enjoying a certain degree of selfgovernment after 1860/1861. (1) The Kingdom of Illyria was one of the Habsburg possessions which existed from 1816 to 1849, when it was broken up. ____________________________________________________________________________
