SPANISH COLONY OF GUINEA

In 1778, by the Treaty of the Pardo, Portugal ceeded to Spain some West African islands (Annobon, Corisco, Elobeyes, Fernando Poo, ...) and coastal territories (Rio Muni) which were under its nominal authority since the end of the 15th century. At first the Spanish showed little intrest to these regions, even considering briefly the possibility of selling them to the British. It was only in 1843 - 1845 that Spanish authority was imposed on the islands Rio Muni becoming, in the same period, a de facto dependency of the French colony of Gabon. This situation lasted until 1900, when, by the Treaty of Paris, France ceded the region to Spain. (1) (1) The interior of Rio Muni only came under Spanish authority in 1926, when the last Fang tribes submited. __________________________________________________________________________________
