In 1855 a separate Apostolic Prefecture of the Annobon, Corisco and Fernando
Poo Islands was established for the Spanish possessions in Guinea. This
lasted until 1872, when, under pressure of the Spanish government, the
missionaries left the islands and the care for the Catholic community was
taken over by the chaplains of the Spanish troops.
In 1883 the Apostolic Prefecture was restored and in 1904 it became the
Apostolic Vicariate Fernando Poo. (1)
(1) After the establishment of the Apostolic Prefecture, the coastal
regions, which were de facto French dependencies, had remained
under the "French" Apostolic Vicariate of Gabon.
Although the Prefects claimed jurisdiction over the territory
it was only assigned to them by the Pope in 1903, after France
and Spain had reached a political agreement on the region.
