SHARJAH
SHEIKHDOM OF SHARJAH
The city of Sharjah was originally part of the al-Qawasim State of Ras al-Khaimah.
In 1814 Sultan ibn Saqr, a former ruler of this state, seized the city and made it
a separate sheikhdom, even annexing Ras al-Khaimah in 1820. (1)
Sharjah was a signatory of the treaties of 1820, 1835, 1843 and 1853 and became a
British protectorate, subject to the residency of the Persian Gulf in 1892.
(1) Ras al-Khaimah again was independent from 1869 to 1900 and since 1921.
The city of Kalba also became a separate sheikhdom in 1936.
