RAS AL-KHAIMAH

SHEIKHDOM OF RAS AL-KHAIMAH

In 1749 the al-Qawasim state of Ras al-Khaimah - founded in the early 18th century - declared its independence of Oman. In the course of the following years it became the leading naval power in the Gulf. This led to conflicts with the HEIC (Honorable East India Compagny) and in 1820 the city was destroyed by the British. Its territory was then annexed to the related state of Sharjah. In 1869, following internal strife, Ras al-Khaimah seceded from Sharjah and became again independent. In 1892 it accepted British protection and became subject to the residency of the Persian Gulf. Taking advantage of troubles following the death of the ruler, Sharjah re-annexed Ras al-Khaimah in 1900. This new union lasted until 1921, when Ras al-Khaimah was once again recognized as a separate state. __________________________________________________________________________________
