PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

BRITISH COLONY OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

The French colony of Īle Saint Jean - founded in 1720 - was occupied by the British in 1758 and formally ceded by France in 1763 by the Treaty of Paris. At first part of Nova Scotia, it became the separate British colony of St. John's Island - renamed Prince Edward Island in 1799 - in 1769. The colony was granted internal selfgovernment in 1851. __________________________________________________________________________________
