LEEWARD ISLANDS


BRITISH COLONY OF THE LEEWARD ISLANDS

In 1833 six British dependencies in the Carribean - Antigua (covering the islands of Antigua, Barbuda and Redonda), the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Montserrat, Nevis and St. Christopher (better known as St. Kitts, also including Anguilla and its dependency Sombrero) - were united into an administrative union headed by the governor of Antigua. (1) In 1871 the union was transformed into a federal Crown Colony. (1) Later internal changes included : 1882 : Nevis was united with St Kitts. 1940 : Dominica was transferred to the administrative union of the Windward Islands. __________________________________________________________________________________
