FRENCH REPUBLIC

The Kingdom of France emerged after the Treaty of Verdun of 843, after the division of the ancient Frankish Empire. The Kingdom lasted until 1793 when the First French Republic was proclaimed. Later France however again became a monarchy - ruled by Kings (1814 - 1815, 1815 - 1848) or Emperors (1804 - 1814, 1815 and since 1852) - and except for the period of the Second Republic in 1848 - 1852 it remained so until 1870, when following the defeats of Emperor Napoleon III against the Germans, the Republicans seized power and proclaimed once again a Republic. (1) In 1870 - 1873 and again in 1914 - 1918 parts of France were occupied by Germany. The French Republic ended when the German once again invaded the country in 1940.
