The island of Corsica became a possession of the Republic of Genoa in 1284. Unable
to quell the successive Corsican revolts the Genoese finally called the French for
help and in 1768 they ceded the administration of the island to France "for as long
as was necessary to cover the expences made by that state to suppress the revolts"
(done by 1769).
This de facto cession of the island was followed by a formal annexation to France
in 1789 and except for the periods 1794 - 1796 and 1814 when it was under British
rule the island now remained a French possession, organized as a French department
since 1811.
In 1940 Corsica became part of the French State of Vichy but in 1943 - after a brief
Italian (1942-1943) and German (1943) occupation - it rallied to the Free French.
