Roman Catholism was introduced in the Philippines after the arrival of the Spanish
in 1565 and a regular hierarchy, at first subordinated to Mexico, was established
soon afterwards.

The Diocese of Cebu, Nome de Gesu was erected as a suffragan of Manila in 1595 (1)
It became an Archdiocese in 1934.
(1) The Diocese of Cebu perhaps was the most important of the Philippine
jurisdictions as :
- it also covered the Mariana Islands (including Guam) until 1902.
- it was in charge of the missions in the southern Islamic Moro Lands
until 1910, when a separate Diocese of Zamboanga was erected for
these regions.

The Diocese of Mnila was erected in 1579 as a suffragan of Mexico.
It became a separate Archdiocese - covering all of the Philippines until 1934 - in
1595.
