Although there had been attempts in the 17th century, it was only at the end of the
18th century that a Catholic community was established in Newfoundland by Irish
missionaries, an Apostolic Prefecture (which became an Apostolic Vicariate in 1796)
being established in 1784.
In 1847 Newfoundland became a Diocese and in 1904 it was made an Archdiocese0
