Catholicism was introduced in Guadeloupe in 1635, when the island was colonized by
the French. It was first organized as an Apostolic Prefecture and became a Diocese
in 1850.
It was a suffragan of the French Archdiocese of Bordeaux until 1905, when it became
exempt.
