The island of Guadeloupe was occupied by the French in 1635.
Originally privately owned, it became a dependency of the French state in 1674.

(1) In 1939 Guadeloupe became part ot the so-called "Theater Atlantic West" and
in 1940 Governor Sorin was forced to rally to the Vichy-regime established
in France after German victory.
This situation lasted until 1943 when the French Committee for National
Liberation (Comité Français de Libération Nationale - CFLN) of Algiers
toke over the administration.

The settlement of Basse Terre was established in 1636.
It became a town and the administrative center of Guadeloupe in 1643, when French
Governor Charles Houël, seigneur de Petit-Pré fixed his residence there.
