ANGLICAN CHURCH IN AUSTRALIA

Anglicanism reached Australia in 1788, when the first English convict settlement was established at Sydney in New South Wales and a first mass was said. Initially the few settlements and communities were under the care of local chaplains who acted under the distant authority of the Archbishops of Canterbury. But as their number gradually increased, it soon became necessary to establish an Australian central authority and in 1825 the island became an archdeaconry of the Indian Diocese of Calcutta. This situation lasted until 1836, when Australia became a separate Diocese [Bishop 1836 - 1847 : William Grant Broughton (1788 - 1853)]. In 1847 this initial diocese was divided into four new dioceses (Adelaide, Melbourne, Newcastle and Sydney - s. b.) which were later further subdivided. Metropolitans of the Australian Provinces From 1847 onwards the Australian dioceses were regrouped into church provinces. These were headed by Metropolitans, usually the incumbents of the initial diocese of the province, who assumed the title of "Presiding Bishop" or - since 1897 - of "Archbishop of (their diocese)". Primates of Australia Since 1872 all Australian dioceses were under the overall leadership of a "Primate of the Church of England in Australia and Tasmania" (usually - but not always - the Metropolitans of New South Wales) 1872 - 1933 The Bishops and Archbishops of Sydney, Metropolitans of New South Wales s.b. 1933 - 1946 Henry Frewen Le Fanu, Archbishop of Perth and Metropolitan of Western Australia, (*1933 - 1935) 1870 - 1946 See ROMAN CATHOLIC HIERARCHY IN AUSTRALIA 1848 - 1945 for more on church history (to be added) __________________________________________________________________________________
