QUEENSLAND

BRITISH COLONY OF QUEENSLAND

Although formally part of the Colony of New South Wales since 1788, the area of future Queensland was only colonized by the British in 1825 when a penal settlement was established at Moreton Bay. Following agitation against the government of New South Wales, Queensland - until then known as the Moreton Bay District of New South Wales - was established as a separate autonomous British Colony in 1859. __________________________________________________________________________________
