Although formally part of the colony of New South Wales since 1788, the area of what
would later become Victoria was only colonized by the British in 1834 when migrants
of Western Australia established the first permanent settlement at Portland Bay.
Five years later the territory - now known as the Port Philip District of New South
Wales - was given a regular administration.
In 1851 the district was detached to become the separate British colony of Victoria,
which was granted internal autonomy in 1855.

(1) Together with New Zealand, Victoria seems to have been one of the few
British colonies to establish such a separate department before becoming
a dominion. In most other cases, defence matters were usually handled by
the colonial or chief secretary (as far as they were not handled by the
British governor).
AUSTRALIAN STATE OF VICTORIA
In 1901 Victoria became a founding member-state of the Commonwealth of Australia.
