Asturies
Area : 10 565 km²
Population : 1 117 370 inhabitants (1995)
Languages : Spanish; Asturian (90% can understand it, 72% can
speak it, 57% can read it, and 38% can write it); Galician in the
west (50 000 speakers).
Asturian, AKA Astur-Leonese, is also spoken
in the Spanish autonomous community of Castilla y León in two
places : in León it is still spoken in Alto Bierzo, but not in
Bajo Bierzo (where Galician is spoken), Sanabria (Zamora), but
Galician is already spoken more in the West (area of As Portelas),
although Asturian-Leonese is also spoken in the Portuguese region
of Miranda do Douro and in some villages of the Northern border
of Portugal in Trás-os-Montes district, such as Ridonor and
Guadramil. Galician is also spoken in three villages of the
Spanish autonomous community of Extremadura, in the area known as
Serra de Xalma, and Portuguese is spoken on some places of the
Spanish border, (Alamedilla, Salamanca; Ferreira de Alcântara, Cáceres;
Olivença, Badajoz).
