I learned to fly RC models in 1989. My first plane was a SIG Kadet Senior MKII. The Kadet Senior is a big and very docile high wing trainer. Unfortunately, I didn't realise that inverted flight wasn't a beginner's manoeuvre until I had made my Kadet in great need for rebuilding. Well, I learned to fly with it, except inverted flight.
Since then I have flown several models for example biplanes, deltas and different aerobatic ones. In the beginning of 1996 I built my first glider, an electric powered one. This was a real eye opener! Electric flight offers a lot of advantages, easy starting, good "throttling", the motor doesn't quit, no vibrations and no noise or oil.
As usual there are no free lunches. Electric power has drawbacks too, weight and short flying time. Batteries, motors, chargers and speed controls have developed tremendously over the last few years. Nowadays you can power all kinds of models with electric motors and still get high performance and long flying times. The secret is building light. Electric motors don't vibrate or soak everything in oil and therefore you can lighter without risking the plane. The following pages show a few of my examples of what you can fly with electrics.
