Manouvers Description

Introduction & Expansion

Milan represents the heart of Italy's richest area, the third most productive region in the whole European continent.

Despite the huge market potential (second only to London and Paris), the local customers haven't been able to express their transportation needs up to October 1998, when the airport system was   reshuffled by the opening of a brand new structure at Malpensa, Terminal 1, together with a new apron, new runway, a railway station and a cargo city (still under construction).

Although these events made transportation in the area much easier, the market redistribution between the city's three airports hasn't yet been completed, and the rush to competition (especially against Munich and Zurich) still has to begin. There is still plenty of room for further expansion, and that's why EuroDirect Airlines has moved its operations here, in favour of Milan Linate and Rome Fiumicino.

At the moment, Linate is being gradually dedicated to shuttle flights to the capital, whereas Orio is becoming an important gateway for point to point regional flights, together with charter and low cost carriers.

Malpensa is taking the biggest share of this growing market, which is expected to become one of Europe's vital air traffic hearts in the next millennium.

The compulsory scenery for Malpensa may be downloaded from the hub briefing room.

Malpensa Airport is located in the middle of a highly industrial, densely populated area. It is located some 50 km from central Milan, which can be reached by highway or by train. Its structures consist of two parallel runways, used for both departures and arrivals without distinction, so as to distribute noise impact on nearby inhabited centres. The airport is also equipped with three aprons and two terminals, and will eventually accommodate at least 30 million passengers per year (against current 14 millions).

Since the airport is so young (opened on 25/10/98), many structures are still under construction.
Most of the vital constructions have been completed: the airport is linked to the center every 30 minutes thanks to the new railway line, the expressway has been enlarged and the new control tower has entered service in late October 1999. Connections will be greatly expanded in the future.
The rail service will be operated every 15 minutes and the station will be linked to the whole regional and national rail network. Work is under progress, and should be completed by 2002, to turn Malpensa station into an integrated station of the national network. New highways will make the Hub more reachable from North Western Italy and a new railway line to Switzerland will make it easier to reach Malpensa from Canton Ticino, the Italian-speaking Swiss sector.

The Cargo Apron) is being intensively extended and equipped with a multifunctional centre, where Air, Rail and Road freights will be processed in the same structures. Work should be completed by 2001.

These are the vital projects being brought to completion, but many more extensions will be completed in the future:

-The opening of the last 1/3 of the Central Building, with the opening of other 5 check-in islands, two Shopping Plazas and four additional baggage claim belts.
-A new Satellite C, dedicated to Non Schengen Flights, with further 10 loading bridges.
-A Shopping Mall in front of Terminal 1
-A maintenance area
-Three more tower gates at Terminal 1
-An automated people mover linking the two terminals, with Terminal 1 acting as a satellite.
