On-line Romance Course

A friend came to me in a dream. His face was careworn, and his heart was troubled. "Once again," he told me, "I've missed the chance to show my Love how special she is! Every year I seem to get worse and worse at picking the right presents for her birthday, our anniversary or Valentine's day. I just don't know what to do!"

There is an answer people - what you need to cultivate is Romance. The following pages are a self-guided course in how to become a Hopeless Romantic. Follow the directions - don't cheat or jump ahead - and the rewards that flow from Love freely and eloquently expressed can be yours!

Requirements to successfully complete the course:

Lesson 1 - Building the Observer
Romance flows from an appreciation of the joys in life. The problem is that to appreciate the joys, you must acknowledge them. To acknowledge them you must experience them. This experience - the ability to recognize and remember the pleasures of life - is the crux for modern mankind.

We are overloaded each day with sensory input. If you didn't have the ability to eliminate 95% of the input you receive from your five senses, you would either be dead or insane. You need to be able to concentrate on the road when you drive - but, all the while, signs in neon and plastic cry out to be noticed and admired. You have to be able to block background noise out - or you'd never finish a conversation. If you couldn't select which tactile inputs are important - your clothes would drive you crazy by rubbing on your body.

Your first lesson in Romance is to learn to observe. For the next five days, pick one of the five senses and during your exercises concentrate on it alone. Go through the exercises in any order...

At the end of your five days, you should be more in touch with your senses. You've developed what I call the Poet's Perspective. Take your new perspective and run with it! Write a poem which describes your Love's attributes from the point of view of each sense. Use unusual viewpoints - what would happen if you viewed your Intended from the eyes of an eagle? How about the family cat? Experiment - and share your work. It may seem silly - that's okay. Just don't poke fun - that's a no-no!
