My love of bread is (like my love of brewing) related to the living yeast. The process of taking inert materials, mixing them with care and caution, to produce the living dough is just WONDERFUL. I also get much frustration out of my system through the kneading process.
Connecting with the earth is very relaxing to me. I enjoy all types of gardening, be it to produce food, add herbs to our spices and medicines, or to add that splash of color that every home needs. I've found that it takes a rhythm to keep a garden alive and flourishing. You have to be consistent in your care - and routine is something my life tends to lack. My gardens bring me back to a routine rhythm - keeping my chaotic nature in balance.
Meditation is my key to balance. When life gets too hectic, I often take time to either sit in a quiet room and concentrate on my breath, or I go for a long, silent walk. Conscious breathing is key to how I meditate. I slow my pulse and breath by placing them in a regular rhythm. I count to four as I breathe in, hold the breath for four counts, breathe out for four, and hold again for four. I repeat this until the rhythm becomes easy, then I lengthen the count to 6 or 8 beats per stage. At eight beats per stage I am calm enough to feel the other rhythms of my body. I will work to keep my back straight, and concentrate on any particular problems I am seeking to resolve. When done, I will dispense with holding my breath and finish with three deep cleansing breaths. It works well for me.
