Fort Flemalle

Location: Left Bank adjacent to Fort Hollogne (right flank) and River Meuse (left flank).

Mission: Protect lines of communication along the River Meuse, and approaches to the western plains.

Type of Fortification: Large quadrangular, type A2, 1/2 A2, B1, B1, C2, D3

Bombardment of the Fort: Bombarded sporadically14 and 15 August. The final bombardment began the 16th, at 0415 and lasted until 0710.

Condition of the Fort: Minor damage. There was a fissure in the central gallery and plotting room above the ventilator. The bakery was partially destroyed. The wall of the right flanking casemate of the gorge was damaged. Minor breecnes along the counterscarp walls. Some cratering on the central massif.

Fort Flemalle

Condition of the Weapons: The 21 and 15cm cupolas turned with some difficulty. One 12cm cupola did not turn at all, the other 12cm was undamaged. Minor damage to the salient guns and flanking casemates, except as noted earlier.

Morale of the Garrison: Remained good.

Food and Supplies: Good. Preserved meat and biscuits on the last days.

Water: Continued to function.

Electrical Power: Good

Ventilation: Bad. Many men succumbed to the fumes.

Latrines: Very bad odors emenated throughout the fort.

Causes of Surrender: 16 August, 0710: Main cause was asphyxiation and odors from the latrine.
