Fort de Boncelles


Location: Right bank, adjacent to Forts Embourg (left flank) and River Meuse (right flank)

Mission: Protect approaches to Liège from the Meuse Valley and the wooded hills south of the city.

Configuration: Large triangular, type A1, B2, C2, D3

Bombardment of the Fort: Began 14 August at 1630. Remained very heavy throughout the night and lasted until 0730 on the 15th.

Condition of the Fort: Counterscarp of front II-III had several breeches of 12 meters, 63 meters, 9, 5, and 4 meters in length. The central massif had a breech around the 15cm, in the direction of the 21cm, and between the searchlight and the 12cm. The wall of the right flanking battery of the gorge was destroyed.

Condition of the Guns: All the large cupolas were sunken in, as were the 5.7cm's. The flanking batteries were still in working condition, with the exception of the right gorge.

Morale of the Garrison: Remained good until the end.

Food and Supplies: Good.

Water: Ran out on the night of 14-15 August.

Lighting: Failed on 14 August around 2230.

Ventilation: Poor.

Latrines: Insignificant

Casualties: A dozen killed and 15 wounded. The commandant was wounded on the 6th and was relieved on the 13th.

Cause of Surrender: 15 August, 0730 hours. Destruction of the concrete was very significant. The turreted weapons were out of service. Main cause of the surrender was asphyxiation by gas.
